Even before the rain forest depletion became a popular topic, Costa Rica wisely took the long term view and realized that leaving the canopied rain forest intact with all its screeching macaws, toucans, and monkeys was a way to remain "green" and at the same time make possible this wonderful experience available. The experience works like this: high up in the rainforest canopy, platforms have been mounted to trees. The platforms are connected by a series of horizontal cables. The adventurers use the cables, connected to a harness, to soar from platform to platform, floating between the overhead foliage and the forest floor. At this level, birds of magnificent colors glide and monkeys swing from branch to branch. Brightly colored butterflies will float past you as you glide to the next platform. Guides are available to answer your questions but take a tip; study before you go because the majesty of the rain forest canopy will overwhelm you.
